Food Guidance

In general there a three types of diets (Herbivores, Carnivores and Omnivores).

Herbivorous fish should consume 75-85% food of plant origin and even 90% those, which are highly specialized.

Carnivorous fish should consume 60-75% food of animal origin, and typical predators up to 75-85%;

Omnivorous fish should consume 50% food of plant origin and 50% food of animal origin.

A balanced diet is just as important for fish as it is for humans. For proper development, fish need  proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, mineral salts (micro and macro elements) and water.

Proteins

Proteins are part of the structure of every fish cel. They are made of amino acids which are necessary for all chemical, biological and metabolic processes.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are classified as simple (np. glucose, fructose) and complex (np. starch, cellulose, chitin). All simple carbohydrates are absorbed without prior chemical treatment. Complex carbohydrates are digested in result of an influence of appropriate enzymes, however, there are those, that are not digested (absorbed), e.g. fibre (cellulose) or chitin. The role of the complex carbohydrates that are not absorbed by the fish (i.e. ballast food) is invaluable due to their beneficial effects on digestion. The source of the fibre are the outer layers of cereals (hulls, shells), oat flakes, legumes and brassica vegetables.

Fats

There are two types of fats. Unsaturated fats (double bonds) and saturated fats (single bonds). Similarly as with humans, unsaturated fats are more desirable for fish because of their speed in binding to other compounds (high chemical activity). Fats are needed as a source of energy and allow absorption of vitamins.

Vitamins, Minerals

Vitamins are an essential ingredient of food, as the fish body cannot produce them, and their deficiency leads to a serious disease – avitaminosis. Vitamins perform regulatory and catalytic functions for most physiological processes. We can divide them into fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and water-soluble vitamins (C, B vitamins).

Minerals and macroelements  are substances that in the body of the fish are found in larger amounts (calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, sodium, potassium and chlorine) and microelements (trace elements) – there are far fewer of them (zinc, copper , manganese, cobalt, tin, iodine, fluorine, molybdenum). In the fish body, these substances play various functions, most often they are components of enzymes, hormones, are responsible for acid-base and osmotic balance, are necessary for the production of blood dye, etc.

A frequent and additional ingredient of food is fish colouring ingredients, so-called pigments, most often carotenoids, or plant dyes. Their natural source are primarily plants: carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, parsley, kale, spinach, red pepper, broccoli and spirulina.

We keep it simple

Our Conclusion

For proper development, fish need several nutrients:

Proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, mineral salts (micro and macro elements) and water.

Mix as much as possible

The More The Merrier

Flakes

We only feed Wild Discus Hobby Centre flakes up to 50% of our fishes diet. Fish tend to become more active and constantly beg for more food.

Mix different flavours in one container and don’t miss any nutrition.

Pellets

Wild Hobby Centre Flakes are our prefered option. Easily to be fed via autofeeder when being at work. Nice side effect. Fish search for pallets at the substrate and rais dirt that will flow into the filter. Substrate is always clean and no siphoning needed.

Freeze Dried Food

We don’t feed frozen bloodworms, because at the end of the body there is a sharp hook that can damage the intestines of our fish. Also frozen blood worms contain parasites. We only feed freeze dried bloodworms.

Check out freed dried Artemia, bloodworms, and Tubifex.
